Why did I like it ?
Watching this show is my first memory of my entire life. It was the first of many exposures I had to Japanese culture. I was entranced by the action of a boy robot doing good deeds.
What do I think now?
The imagination of Osamu Tezuka amazes me. The show is genuine science fiction, but a bit too silly for me now. I read tons of manga and watch shows like "Naruto" and "One Piece."
What does liking it say about me?
This really set me on my path towards appreciating and liking the experience of Japanese culture. Following influences were four Japanese exchange students staying with my family for weeks when I was in middle school, the mini-series "Shogun," and the movie "Akira." Of all cultures in the world, I am most interested in Japan and much of it is because of this show. From this show flows my love of sci-fi, especially Philip K. Dick.
Why should you watch it?
Anyone interested in the history of anime and manga has to see this to appreciate the culture. While the plots are a bit silly and very kid-oriented, it truly explores what it means to be human, like all good sci-fi. |
